Aircraft Carrier Successfully Transported!

On Saturday 26th January, the weather was perfect – if a little chilly – for transporting this 17ft model aircraft carrier to the Ashworth Barracks! The large, yet fragile model was based on HMS Implacable, a carrier built for the Royal Navy and used during the Second World War. It was donated to the museum by the family of the late David Hall. Click here for more information on the model itself.

We used an 18t DAF CF with air suspension to move the huge model on the eight mile journey from Barnby Dun to the Ashworth Barracks in Balby. Many thanks to our volunteer driver for the day, Paul Ridsdale!

The day was an incredible success, and we were proud to be involved in such a great cause in our home town, Doncaster.

Warship Transported for Charity

David Hill spent the final years of his life working on this amazing 17ft model aircraft carrier. After Mr Hill sadly passed away, his family donated the model to the Ashworth Barracks Museum. Ashworth Barracks, Balby, is run by the Victoria Cross Trust, who ensure the memory and graves of Victoria Cross recipients are kept intact as a true piece of British history. They gratefully accepted the donation, but had no way to transport the huge model eight miles from Mr Hill’s garage to the museum. This led to a social media appeal, which caught our attention.

Our team saw the museum’s appeal on Facebook, claiming they were struggling to find a way to move the model. JMS of Doncaster were happy to help – free of charge, of course! The model needed to make the eight-mile journey from Mr Hill’s home in Barnby Dun to the Ashworth Barracks in Balby.

Our team have been to the property to discuss a strategic plan of action with the family and Ashworth Barracks. Based on HMS Implacable, which was built for the Royal Navy and used during WWII, the long, heavy, intricate model has lots of delicate pieces. The model has to be moved carefully, with no damage before it reaches the museum. We discussed how it could be loaded onto one of our 18t vehicles, and transported from there to Ashworth Barracks.

The actual transportation is taking place on Saturday 26th January. It will take a lot of helpers from the Barracks to manoeuvre the model from the garage onto our vehicle, before transporting it to the Barracks. We’re proud to help and support the local charity, and pleased to help preserve this detailed, handmade model of the WWII aircraft carrier.

The Importance of Logistics Management

Logistics is an essential part of the supply chain, working hand in hand to maximise your business operations. With our logistic management services, we ensure the right goods are sent to the right place, at the right time. Having a dedicated logistics manager allows you to concentrate on operational efficiencies within your business.

Effective logistics management is also at the heart of customer satisfaction in a wide range of businesses and commercial operations. Working closely with other aspects of the supply chain, logistics management can help ensure your supply meets customer demand, leading to increased customer satisfaction – further leading to increasing revenues for your company.

JMS of Doncaster provide complete Warehousing, Distribution and Logistics services, delivering goods across the whole of the UK. Our 30,000sq. ft. warehouse allows for safe, secure indoor storage of your goods. We also have two acres of secure outdoor storage space, allowing our customers to store anything which is unable to be stored in the warehouse itself.

Brexit and the Haulage Industry

As an international haulage company, JMS of Doncaster provide haulage services operating across all areas of the UK, with international services available throughout Europe. It’s no secret that Brexit is affecting businesses all over the country – and as an international business, haulage is no different.

As Britain is preparing for a no-deal Brexit scenario, talks of a “lorry lottery” are in place. A European Conference of Ministers of Transport (ECMT) international road haulage permit may be necessary for journeys between ECMT member countries.

There are currently talks to give around 4,000 permits to around 40,000 UK vehicles, with the least polluting vehicles being put at the front of the queue. JMS of Doncaster consistently improve the environmental impact of our business, and always look for improvement opportunities within our business activities.

ECMT permits allow for journeys to be made between the 43 ECMT member countries. Although it may seem like a necessity for UK haulage companies to receive an ECMT permit, these permits may not be necessary long term. In the event of a no-deal Brexit, the UK will still attempt to seek agreements with the 27 EU states. In the long term, this will help avoid the need for ECMT permits and allow haulage companies to move between countries in the EU.

JMS of Doncaster are committed to providing quality haulage services, with the highest level of customer service available. In the event of a no-deal Brexit, we aim to continue to provide the same quality of services our customers have come to expect for almost 30 years.

We will still offer Same Day Delivery services to all areas of the UK, secure Warehousing and Logistics services, and as members of Pallet Track, still offer express Pallet Delivery services throughout the country.

Learner Drivers on UK Motorways

Learner drivers are now allowed on UK motorways – how will this affect the haulage industry?

Learner drivers have been legally allowed to drive on dual carriageways for years – many of which have 70mph speed limits and similar rules to driving on a motorway. However, last month, new legislation came into effect which allows learner drivers to drive on motorways. Motorways are heavily used by commercial drivers and lorry drivers up and down the UK, which begs the question; how will the new legislation affect drivers in the haulage industry?

Previously, only drivers who had already passed their test could drive on motorways – even if they lacked any training or previous experience. This new law would give drivers the knowledge and experience needed to drive on motorways unassisted. It goes without saying that learner drivers should only be taken onto motorways when they are ready, and under the new legislation, a learner can only drive on motorways with a certified instructor in a car with dual controls. So there shouldn’t be any panicking parents in the passenger seat!

The Road Haulage Association supports learner drivers being allowed on the motorway when they’re ready; “Any measure which makes Britain’s safest roads even safer has to be a good thing.”

We agree with this sentiment, as long as the learner driver is ready to take the next step and drive on motorways. Educating young drivers on the differences faced when driving on motorways is vital to give confidence to new, young drivers. We would much rather have a learner driver with a certified instructor on the motorway than somebody who has passed their test without any motorway experience.

With the installation of smart motorways up and down the country, motorway driving is becoming more and more complex. Being trained on the differences between driving on motorways and other roads will improve the confidence of learner drivers, while making our motorways a safer place. In the long term, this change can only benefit the haulage industry, giving new drivers the skills and knowledge needed to drive on the motorway. The change will make motorways safer for everybody in the haulage industry, if implemented correctly.

Air Pollution & the Haulage Industry

By 2025, HGV emissions are set to be at a fifth of what they were in 2013. Meanwhile, according to US research, chemicals in everyday household products are now a key contributor to city air pollution, rivalling some vehicle emissions. This begs the question; is the haulage industry to blame for increased air pollution?Last month, Michael Gove announced the UK government’s Clean Air Strategy, aiming to cut air pollution by 2025. The government aim to halve the number of people living in locations with air pollution levels above World Health Organisation guidelines in this time. At JMS Haulage, we always focus on environmental risks and exposures, constantly looking for ways to improve our environmental performance. UK Clean Air Strategy 2018The Road Haulage Association (RHA) has cautiously welcomed the government’s new Clean Air Strategy, which does not specifically target the haulage industry. Instead, the strategy targets domestic fuel, ammonia farming and car tyre dust. New legislation, ensuring only the cleanest domestic fuels are being sold, should prevent around 8,000 tonnes of harmful particulate matter from entering the atmosphere each year. For the first time ever, the UK government is making an effort to reduce ammonia emissions from farming – responsible for around 88% of total ammonia emissions.Although the strategy is cracking down on pollution targets outside of the haulage industry, it also gives individual councils more powers, which is still a worry for transport companies. Without specific, nationwide legislation, the waters are muddied for haulage companies who face potential charges for bringing certain vehicles into specific areas. This is in addition to last year’s £3.5-billion plan to reduce air pollution from all road transport and diesel vehicles.  Improving Environmental Standards In 2015, buses and lorries accounted for just 7.6% of NOx emissions. The haulage industry has done a fantastic job cleaning air pollution, with HGV emissions being reduced by around 43% since 2013. Emissions from the haulage sector are expected to have fallen 70% by the end of 2021 – in less than a decade! At JMS Haulage, we focus attention on environmental risks and exposures within all the work we do, while looking for improvement opportunities in our business activities. Our overnight Pallet Track delivery service helps ease road congestion at busy periods during the day, and we are LEZ compliant, not restricted for access into London city centre areas. We even aim to reduce our pollution off the road, maximising our on-site recycling while identifying and managing any excessive energy consumption. The haulage industry is making fantastic steps forward in becoming more environmentally friendly, with NOx emissions expected to have dropped 70% from 2013, by the end of 2021. It’s fantastic that the government are focusing on more than just the haulage industry when tackling environmental issues. But with unclear legislation across the country, and councils being given more power, transport companies could be charged for entering certain areas in the wrong vehicles. At JMS, we’re continuously improving our environmental impact, constantly learning and integrating environmental awareness in all aspects of our business, with our environmentally friendly fleet.

Fantastic Service from Ongoing Training

At JMS of Doncaster, we deal with over 400 customers, providing total transport solutions to all areas of the UK. Our team are dedicated to providing top quality haulage services, including offering same-day service and international transport links. That’s why we provide regular training to all JMS staff, ensuring our customers only get the best service.

JMS drivers are at the front and centre of the transport services we provide. We ensure all our drivers receive periodic training to maintain their Driver Certificate of Professional Competence (Driver CPC). A Driver CPC is essential for drivers working within the European Union. We continue and fund Driver CPC training for all our team, completing a minimum of 35 hours training for each driver, every 5 years.

We also employ a mandatory Company Induction Training Programme within each employee’s first week of employment. This helps all our employees provide the best transport and customer service available. Our comprehensive staff training covers a wide range of topics, including Health & Safety management, safe working procedures and manual handling.

Although our drivers make up a large section of our work force, they’re not the whole story. We also have teams of admin staff in the transport office, accounts and in customer service departments. We provide and fund Driver CPC training to all members of the Transport office and certain members of the Admin team. This enhances the whole JMS team’s efficiency in communication, first aid, and health and safety.

All the training we provide to staff ensures our customers receive only top quality haulage services and the best customer service when communicating with our staff. Read more about why you should use JMS for all your haulage needs, including some great reviews from our customers.
